Clearly shown Rizal is not a horror fan. Especially the majestic urban legend of lacks of everything that horror movie should be. Not sure why he never learned from experience, instead, he keeps doing it. Again and focus on how the scene looks good. How the angle lightings can be dramatic. How the sfx can be as good as MCU. That's OK if it's a tv commercial or music video, which is his expertise. But not a movie. Let alone a horror unless those factors that you're looking for, stay away. One of the strongest aspects to be had here is the strength it shows in the characters that carried over from the original. The bond between the kids that started in the first one where they grew from pranking each other and splitting off into separate groups before banding together to defeat the ghost is still here. From the panic and concern over looking for the lost sibling at the carnival to the kids all singing along together, the film feels rather strong in showing their past affected them and brought them genuinely closer together. This helps to add a touch of terror to the film as we start to get an eerie feeling with the way she attaches herself to the youngest daughter while they visit with the sinister way she keeps trying to hold onto her or the glances thrown when they're not looking. It becomes much creepier once the truth is revealed about the situation and the scares become more personal knowing that something's wrong to the characters. On top of that, the film generates a lot to like with its ghostly haunting sequences. The switch to the remote house from the first one to being out in the woods adds a definite fairy-tale atmosphere to the proceedings, offering a lush green atmosphere and quiet eeriness that goes together nicely. The hidden shacks and overgrown seen around the property complete the story along with a Gothic feel to the scenes inside the house that shouldn't look that cozy from the outside. As the darker subject matter comes into focus with the eerie whispers and the appearances of the spirits interacting with the group through the shadow-play the brothers engage in or the attempted possession while the boyfriend is doing yoga with the other brother, the scares become quite enjoyable when the film goes into the frantic final half that adds more to the fairy tale inspiration knowing that the children are still in danger. Featuring several chilling encounters with the Kuntilanak ghost throughout the house and surrounding woods as well as a trip to a disturbing carnival full of trapped souls, there's enough to like with this film. There are some problems with this one. The biggest obstacle here is the film's storyline that adds unnecessary elements and characters that pad out the running time. That this one is longer than the original shouldn't be so as the different scenes of the kids running around the forest or the endless conversations between the girls end up adding nothing to the film beyond extending the length. That focus on not making the central reason for them visiting in her reconnecting with her supposed birth mother a bigger priority makes for a slipshod storyline here as this was the entire reasoning why they ventured out into the middle of the woods to meet up yet it simply feels hollow without any kind of care or attention to it. With the end result that nearly an hour goes by without the appearance of the ghost or even revealing it's true plans, the padding becomes most apparent that the film has run on far too long with these bland scenes. Summary Kuntilanak is another predictable movie to add to Netflix’s failed horror list. Only a few weeks ago I grumbled at The 3rd Eye for its lack of imagination and new ideas for the horror genre. And here we are now, a couple of weeks later, with a new Netflix-labelled foreign film named Kuntilanak, which tries to embrace seen-before horror with some comedy angles; a weird hybrid of horror meets Home Alone. Netflix’s Kuntilanak suffers from the originality problem. In case of interest, a Kuntilanak, also known as a Pontianak, is a female vampiric ghost in Malay mythology. In the film, one exists in a mirror in a haunted house and it preys on innocent children. At the start of the movie, a grieving neglected young boy is consumed by the mirror which is followed by the cries of his father who is devastated by the events. Written on paper, Kuntilanak sounds like an interesting time, but really it stagnates and instils boredom very early on. The Indonesian horror movie swiftly moves on to four kids, who decide to explore this abandoned house that has been splashed over the news because of the disappearance of the young boy. A reality show has advertised a competition that challenges the public to prove the existence of the Kuntilanak. This plot point tries to drive some comedy into the horror, which falls sadly flat each time, as the horror tones are quickly followed up by poorly timed jolly music. Netflix’s Kuntilanak does not work at all. It’s easy to become fed up by the halfway mark. I was irritated. The rest of the Netflix film drives home the usual horror tropes we have all become accustomed to. The performances are fine but the yearning for something new, or to be surprised, is overcome by the knowledge that you just want this movie to end. At one point one of the young children puts her hands on the static television for no significant reason at all but to add to Rizal Mantovanis checklist for creepy elements to add to the movie. What Kuntilanak needed is a reason to care about the children; the end objective was for them to survive and adhere to this reality contest, but the one kid we cared about was consumed by this evilness at the beginning; the other children may as well be props. I apologise for my grumpiness but when you rely on Netflix to provide some genuine horror content and to be let down repeatedly, all I can do is sit back and repeat the same problems over and over again. Nobody cares about the predictable jumps, the staticky televisions, the creepy young girl and situational horror that a number of directors keep getting budgets for. Netflix’s Kuntilanak is another horror movie with wishful thinking that audiences will embrace it. The film was completely off the mark. I've been watching a fair bit of Indonesian cinema lately and truth be told I kind of like what I see and for the most part that applies to tells the story of a group of children who are forced to battle a mysterious creature that preys on the young and steals them opening sequence immediately got my attention, it was excellent. For this reason I had high hopes, but sadly a couple of things stopped the film from really meeting its of all the comedy. If the film isn't an intentional horror comedy then for the most part comedy should be kept clear or a horror, it takes away the fear element and just stops you taking the whole thing the kids, children are the leads of the film which is never good. Five of them leading in a film of this type? Imagine if you merged The Ring 2002 with the Goonies 1985 and that is basically what you have creature effects are great, they adopt the traditional Asian style of scary black haired undead lady perfectly and for that reason this should have been a scary film. The method of which they use the scares also are very good, but they're sadly watered down by the kids.
